VegDRI Highlights for 9/21/2015

Western States

The Cascade Range and coastal regions of Washington and northern Oregon remain in moderate drought according to the VegDRI map. West central Idaho remains in moderate vegetative drought. Vegetation in the western region of Montana has been drying gradually over the past couple of months, and is now in moderate drought. Vegetation in north central Wyoming is approaching moderate drought.

The expanse of moderate to severe vegetative drought across east central Nevada remains in place. Along the southern end of Utah’s Wasatch Front, vegetation conditions are drier than usual to moderate drought.

The VegDRI map for northern California indicates that vegetation conditions are in moderate drought. In the Modoc Plateau of northern California, and along the Sierras, vegetation conditions are in severe drought. In the area just south of the San Francisco Bay, the VegDRI map showed a quick degradation in vegetation conditions from drier than usual six weeks ago to extreme drought two weeks ago. The area remains in severe to extreme vegetative drought.

Great Plains

There are no significant areas of vegetative drought in the northern plains.

The VegDRI map is showing no significant areas of vegetative drought in the southern plains, with the exception of the Big Bend region of Texas, which is drier than usual.


Patches of dry vegetation conditions are developing in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin.


Dry vegetation conditions have been developing steadily in much of the northeast since late June. In eastern and southeast New York, southern Vermont, southern New Hampshire and most of Massachusetts, conditions remain drier than usual. In the Adirondacks region of New York, vegetation remains in moderate drought. Patches of moderate drought that recently developed in southern Connecticut are in severe drought. Vegetation conditions in northern New Jersey have improved over the past two weeks from moderate drought to drier than usual.


The VegDRI map is showing moderate to severe drought across central and western North Carolina and central South Carolina. A weather station north of Charleston, South Carolina, has been reporting dry conditions for a couple of months now, leading the VegDRI map to show extreme drought in the area.

Elsewhere in the South, vegetation conditions are dry in east central Arkansas, southern Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. A bullseye of moderate drought remains over western Florida, and moderate drought has developed west of Tallahassee. The VegDRI map for southeast Florida shows moderate drought vegetation conditions continuing to improve.
